Committed to the Hands That Heal Smiles

Welcome to Hygiene Sharp—where precision meets prevention.
I'm Charmaine Reyes, RDA and RDH since 2006. After years of temping across the Bay Area, I saw a common issue: dull, worn hygiene instruments slowing down care and straining clinicians. As a practicing hygienist, I know the difference sharp tools make—for comfort, efficiency, and quality of care. That’s why I started Hygiene Sharp.

We offer in-office sharpening and pickup/drop-off services in San Francisco and nearby cities, plus mail-in options for providers across the U.S. Each instrument is carefully sharpened with precision and preservation in mind—because I treat every instrument like it’s my own.

Sharp instruments reduce fatigue, extend instrument life, and help you deliver the care your patients deserve. We’re here to keep you sharp, so you can keep doing what you do best.

Why choose Hygiene Sharp?

At Hygiene Sharp, we believe precision matters.
That’s why every instrument is meticulously sharpened by hand—never rushed, never mass-processed. We use a specialized combination of ceramic, diamond cards, and Arkansas stones to restore your edges with care and accuracy.

For instruments made of harder or thicker metals, we may begin with a controlled, limited-use rotary pass to efficiently reset the bevel. From there, each edge is refined through a three-step sharpening process—starting with coarse, then medium, and finishing with a fine-grit ceramic stone—for a sharp, polished edge you can feel with every stroke.

Research backs what experience has shown us:

The most effective way to sharpen dental instruments is with sharpening stones—and consistent, controlled pressure along the lateral surfaces of the cutting edge. While rotary devices may offer speed, relying on them exclusively often leads to irregular edges, misshapen tips, and excessive wiry edges that compromise both precision and performance.1,3,5

How often should instruments be sharpened?

Ideally, every 15–45 strokes—or roughly after 14 sterilization cycles. But in reality, it depends on several factors: the type of metal, the design of the bevel and edges, and how well the original blade shape is maintained. 2,4-6

At Hygiene Sharp, we recommend setting a regular sharpening schedule or protocol to help preserve a sharp, effective cutting edge—and protect both your body and your patients.
